Vacation Tips

Vacations should be a time to relax and forget about the little worries in life.

Sometimes, it can be hard to let go and fully rest and unwind. One of the best things you can do to ease your mind is to leave your home in a state you will be happy to return to – and one which won’t stick you with an energy bill that will have you saying, “weren’t we gone for three weeks??”

  • During the hot summer months (unless there are pets in the home) either turn off the central air or leave it at 85 degrees.
  • Winter can be a bit trickier. Keep the thermostat at 50 to avoid the risk of pipes freezing.
  • Any appliance plugged in is using electricity. Unplug any unnecessary appliances and electronics, including smaller items such as coffee pots, cell phone chargers, and lamps.
  • To prevent a home from looking abandoned and particularly appealing to burglars, some people choose to leave a few select lamps on. This is a good safety idea but will drain your power. Invest in a cheap timed light, which will assist in giving the appearance that someone is home.
  • Lower blinds! Close curtains! This is not only a good tip for going on vacation, but for everyday energy conservation.
  • If it’s worth the effort for you, this can even be an opportunity to clean and air out your fridge. Empty it of all contents, unplug and leave the door open. Place a box of baking soda inside to draw out moisture and prevent mold.

Ease your mind while on vacation by putting these tips into practice. Putting a little bit of thought and effort before leaving can make a big difference while being away! Making sure your roof is in good shape is critical to keeping your home energy efficient and your family is safe. Schedule an appointment with Apachee today!
